Amaro 101: An Introduction to Italian Amari

March 29, 2012

Aloha kakou,

Today I hope to expand your knowledge of bitter liqueurs with a post on Italian amari. Amari is the plural of amaro, the Italian word for bitter. Bitter liqueurs have a long tradition in Italy as well as other ancient civilizations such as China. They were traditionally used as tonics for a variety of medical purposes, principal among them as a digestive aid. In Amaro 101, I introduce you to seven popular amari distributed here in the US, provide a little background and suggest a couple of cocktails for each. Read on here and enjoy!

Mahalo,
Josh
