Rhum Review: Clement Cuvée Homère

Today we’re in for a special treat, folks. This is the Cuvée Homère Clément Rhum Vieux Agricole Hors D’Age: the highest marque from the house of Clément.  It’s a blend of the cellar master’s favorite rhums of the last fifteen years. Hors d’age literally means “beyond age” which in practice means it’s so special that it should not be defined by its age, but by its high quality.

The Cuvée Homère bottle is completely different than the others in the Clément line. The bottle is rectangular, thick, and boasting a heavy metal screw cap and gold leaf script label. It almost resembles a gigantic bottle of cologne. Let’s pour a glass and see what we have here.

In the snifter, the rhum is a deep copper bronze with gold highlights. Legs that form after swirling suggest a fair viscosity, and the initial nosing yields virtually no astringency. The aromas here are similar to the 10-year, but are a bit more refined. There is less smoke and tobacco, but the leather is present. A grassy sweetness is suggested, as is dried fruit and spices, black pepper, anise and allspice among them. Let’s taste…

The rhum enters with an assertive confidence. The oak coats the tongue as the spices move to mid-palate. There is a bit of sirop de canne along with orange marmalade, dried figs, dried apricots and dates. In contrast to the sweet imagery, however, the rhum is ultimately very dry and mature. As I sip further, the smoke and tobacco notes pervade, and the finish develops similar qualities to the 10-year, albeit with less licorice. That said, the licorice/anise/fennel notes do linger and persist on the finish. The entire experience comes together delightfully.

Summing up, the Cuvée Homère is a complex sipper that represents the highest art of the Martiniquan tradition, worthy of any rum connoisseur’s top shelf.
