August 20, 2012

Aloha kakou!

Today I’m back with another rum review, and this time it’s a sipper from Venezuela: Santa Teresa 1796. This solera-aged rum has garnered much praise from rum experts, but I’m not ready to call it one of my favorites.  Read the review here and see what I found.

Read the story and recipe here and see what I’m going on about.

New Rum Review: Caliche

August 8, 2012

Aloha!

At long last, I’m back with a new rum review! This is a bit of a departure for me, as it’s my first review of a white rum. The rum is called Caliche–a new super premium offering from Roberto Serralles and Rande Gerber. You may have seen pictures of Cindy Crawford posing with the Caliche bottle recently (she’s married to Rande). I figured if it’s good enough for Cindy, it’s certainly good enough for me. Read the review here.

Busy Summer Yields Few Updates

August 6, 2012

Aloha kakou,

August is here, and it’s been more than two months since my last rum review was posted. I have no real excuse other than a couple of weeks spent in Italy, but suffice to say I’ll be back with more rum reviews very soon!

In related news, I have added a top shelf to my home bar (much to my wife’s chagrin) where some of my favorites now reside. For up-to-the-minute updates, you can always find me on Twitter @inuakena.

More soon–I promise!

Mahalo for visiting as always,

Aloha kakou!

Today we add another Panamanian rum review to the slate as we examine the 15-year rum from Alma de Bohemio, or Bohemian Soul Rum. Given my fondness for the other Panamanian rums in my bar, I’m excited to have a taste of this one. Let’s get to it! Read the full review here.

Amaro 101: An Introduction to Italian Amari

March 29, 2012

Aloha kakou,

Today I hope to expand your knowledge of bitter liqueurs with a post on Italian amari. Amari is the plural of amaro, the Italian word for bitter. Bitter liqueurs have a long tradition in Italy as well as other ancient civilizations such as China. They were traditionally used as tonics for a variety of medical purposes, principal among them as a digestive aid. In Amaro 101, I introduce you to seven popular amari distributed here in the US, provide a little background and suggest a couple of cocktails for each. Read on here and enjoy!

Josh
