It’s time for another cocktail post, and this time it’s back to basics with a classic: the Rum Old Fashioned. I drink most of my Old Fashioned cocktails with bourbon, but sometimes rum is called for, and let’s face it–I’ve got the stuff by the gallon! There are a lot of Old Fashioned recipes out there that have some twisted ideas of what should go into this venerable libation, and in this post, I try and set you on the straight and narrow. I’m starting the new year off right with a review of a rum I’ve been enjoying for a while now: Plantation Extra Old. Contrary to a popular misconception, this is actually not a 20 year-old rum, but a 12-year old. No matter, it’s smooth beyond its years by far.
